The mystery is solved. I was speaking with a very knowledgeable local shopkeeper yesterday (Cassie) who explained the history of this cairn to me. It was erected to celebrate the 'coming of age' in 1871 of Allan Russell MacKenzie, a son of the then time Laird of Glenmuick Estate. You get a beautiful view down over Glenmuick house from the cairn, as well as of all the hills around, including the spectacular Lochnagar. The MacKenzies were seemingly a very popular family in Ballater, and played a big part in the history of the village. ARM was born in Calcutta in 1850, but moved back to Scotland with his family in 1851. He died in 1906. I have now discovered a website with masses of information about the family, and I sense that it's not the last time I will be referring to it. However, I've also learned that if I want to know something about the village ... 'ask Cassie'! :-)
So interesting Issi!! Love this image with that wonderful backdrop!! You are so lucky to be fit enough to get the best of the countryside you now live in!! I appreciate you sharing with us as I know I could never get up there!!
Fav. Such a beautiful b&w image. And thank you for the story. When I was young I was enchanted by the history of Scotland and still have a soft spot for that beautiful country which I have visited four times.
@vignouse It's funny, because I wasn't looking forward to coming back 'home' after so long abroad. However, I am enjoying rediscovering all that Scotland has to offer.
