As many will know, John Brown was a ghillie to Queen Victoria - and very fond she was of him. There has been a lot of talk about whether he was just a good friend, or more than that. Queen Victoria commissioned this life-sized statue of him shortly after his death. The inscription reads : 'Friend more than servant. Loyal. Truthful. Brave. Self less than Duty, even to the Grave'. She had it erected in the grounds of Balmoral Castle. Edward VII, who resented Brown, had the statue moved to this less conspicuous site in the woodlands of the Balmoral Estate. But we found it yesterday on our walk! ;-)
John Brown's grave is in Crathie, along with other members of his family. I must go check that out one day.
No walking today. A day of rest for my little leggies!
that's fascinating to see - and a rest day must be needed (it's one of the reasons the Pennine Way is so tough - two to three weeks of walking continuously, pretty much - 270 miles not including the ups and downs)
Well i think he looks very grand among the trees, great background even if he has been banished! I remember watching the film about him, Billy Connolly played him beautifully.
