Well, as suspected, my scheduled day for checking up on the osprey wasn't the best. It was very wet and windy. However, the male was flying around and the female was sitting on the nest being buffeted by the wind. Why oh why do they sit on the top of the highest tree? I was worried that the nest would blow off - but it seems to be stable as a rock. Better on black.
@lifeat60degrees Really? That's brilliant. I wonder where it is nesting? They usually pick a very tall tree ... hard to find in Shetland I'd think. I'm watching this one on a weekly basis. It's very conveniently situated at the side of the main road to my dad's house!
@jamibann It won't be nesting. It's thought it is a juvenile. We do Norwegian birds passing through maybe not every year but from time to time.Usually at the same spot as well.
They make the most amazing nests don't they. There used to be a huge nest at the top of Gan Gan Hill here in the bay and the nest was in the middle of one of the aerial towers.
Quite amazing. The branch doesn't look too big, but I guess it is doing the job. Birds can be so patient...sitting on their nests for days (and in your case weeks) at a time. I remember seeing osprey nests on top of electrical poles when I went to Cape Canaveral FL a number of years ago. I guess no predators can get to them.
There is a camera located next to an eagle's nest here in PA which you can watch live streaming. Their nests are very similar to this Osprey's nest. One day the wind was blowing so hard that next was swaying around like crazy! I actually had to stop watching the eagles because the movement was making me queasy! I love how the Osprey is looking directly at you in this shot.
@s4sayer Sadly not, but one day I might be able to bring him down to the tree with binoculars. But that will depend on COVID-19! In the meantime I can show him my weekly photo updates.
@radiogirl I've been lucky ... got a new lens as an advance birthday pressie. I love it. I look forward to being able to stay out a bit longer once we get some relief from this current lockdown period - hopefully after the 28th.
I think this lady is watching you.
Wonderful shot!
