From the Shetland Language Dictionary : Hentilagets (n) tufts of wool lost from sheeps' backs and gathered from pasture. By extension, odds and ends. When I saw these tufts of Highland Cow hair stuck on the fence, I thought of my mum, a Shetlander, who used this word often. It doesn't quite work for cow hair I don't think, but it's such a lovely word!
Lovely photo, lovely colour and lovely word... language is so fascinating.
My mum in law tells about collecting the sheep wool from fences as a youngster in Skye and sending bagfuls of it away. It was quite a valuable product....nothing wasted.
I’ve never heard it called that before! We used to collect wool off the barbed wire years ago when sheep wool was worth something but sadly those days are gone. Your Highland cow hair looks fantastic there....
