I saw the Ospreys at their nest a couple of months ago, so I knew they'd arrived. However I hadn't seen them for weeks, and I was worried that they'd come to grief. Then, when driving to Braemar a couple of weeks ago, I saw them both and have now seen them both regularly. I think there must be a chick/chicks in the nest by now. So, I took a drive up yesterday with a view to getting a few pics from my remote viewpoint on the hillside. I was rewarded by both of them being on the nest when I arrived and I got this picture almost immediately. I was delighted - even though I knew I'd missed him bring her a fish. She then proceeded to eat it while he did a few fly-rounds, 'talking' to her all the time. He then landed on one of the neighbouring trees for a while. I never got a better image than this one - even though I hung out for over an hour. But I was delighted with my catch for the day! Better viewed on black.
@yorkshirekiwi Hi Carole. This is an 'unsupervised' nest which sits not far from a main road near Braemar. It's an old buzzard's nest that the Ospreys took over, with a deep cup, so the eggs are well hidden, seemingly. Access to viewing the nest is tricky - you need to know where to go. As long as you are respectful no-one bothers you. I've only once ever met someone else is 'my' spot. It's a real treat to be able to follow the progress of the ospreys in such a natural setting.
What a sight and what a photo! My friends in the US live by a river and built an osprey platform much to the amusement of a boatman who did river tours and used to joke about it with his tour parties over his loudspeaker! Well he ate his words when the ospreys started to build a nest and my friends did contemplate asking for a share of the profits as it became a highlight of the tour! I think they've had to replace the platform because the nest got too heavy after a few years and I haven't seen the latest iteration - time for another visit. These birds do slightly outshine my nesting blackbirds haha!!
Oh how well you’ve done this year….so glad we are able to see these Ospreys again this year….always glad to know they have survived another winter & returned to their nest. Great action here…..That is a very substantial nest, it would only need a bit of maintenance & good to go.
Love the colours.
