Growing in our garden, and another two underneath waiting to push up. Edible or not? On the one hand my identifier says it's best treated as a 'look but do not touch' species, as lots of people are allergic. On the other hand the same identifier says that it's much sought after, and edible. Ah well, I won't be trying. I'll go with 'look and don't touch'!
Best bit about autumn is the fungi! Bit early for your though I would have thought. Great DOF, and I love how it looks like it's just emerging from the bark and tree litter.
When I helped with the Young Fella's trip to the forest with a school group fungi hunting about a decade or so ago, the teachers around me gave an audible gasp as I told my group of children "You can eat ALL fungi.......but some of them only once." The children worked it out faster than the teachers and none of them dared touch anything in case it was poisonous!
This is a very classy shape….it looks very eatable to me but better safe than sorry! I love a good mushroom but only mostly from the shop these days. We used to have loads growing in the fields at certain times but no access these days.
I love @casablanca little story!
I've had several spring up in my yard that were edible BUT my motto is, "Unless I have a mushroom expert tell me it is, I'm not eating it." (o; Sadly I do not know any mushroom experts, but on the other hand no mushroom has ever made me sick. Like you, I take a picture and let them be. Great close-up!
@casablanca too funny!
