There are five graves of unidentified seamen of the Merchant Navy in this cemetery, looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. I know my mum always hoped that her dad was one of them, as his body could well have been washed up in this area, given the course his ship was on when it was torpedoed during the second world war. Who knows?
The much older headstone in this image is unrelated, but I thought it occupied a rather lovely spot on top of the grassy knoll overlooking the misty inlet of water at Dervaig.
This is lovely, so full of atmosphere.
We took a boat trip around Mull from Oban on our honeymoon. Didn't actually get off here but went instead to Iona.
Love this composition, a really atmospheric image. A very sad story about your grandad but a nice spot to be "with" him, even if he's not actually buried there.
Well I would be quite happy to be laid to rest there. It must have given some comfort to your mum to think that her dad might possibly be one of these five seamen. Would be a fitting place.
@777margo Oh, Margo, that's a shame! Hopefully you'll be back one day. I've enjoyed following you and seeing your lovely images from the other side of the world. Take care. xx
