Yellowstone National Park, 1967

Yesterday went well, but it is a very tiring day. Dad enjoyed himself and was delighted with the small gifts we'd bought him. The meal went well, but more on that in a moment. We watched the King's message at 3pm and thought it was pretty good. Afterwards we did a slide show for dad of his 1967 6-month trip to the USA. This was one of our favourite slides, which he took in Yellowstone National Park. We find the slide shows are really good for dad, as he narrates them from start to finish and it brings back good memories for him. Last year we did the same thing, but it was of Braemar folk and places. Next year, all being well, we will do Mountain Rescue. Unfortunately, although he narrates throughout, he doesn't remember any of it an hour or so later, but that's just the way it is.

As regards the meal, well, I thought I smelt burning in the Aga oven this morning and went to clean it. I only found the dish of 'pigs in blankets', burned to a crisp having been in there since about 12 noon yesterday. Made me giggle this morning! My mum used to always forget something in the oven at Christmas. So easy to do with so many different things going on the plate, and I may say that no-one even noticed!
You are being so caring and thoughtful with this. Changing the slides to another format is not easy. Done it myself. You are also so brave to tell us of your forgetfulness! We can so relate!

Such special times for your dad Issi, to be able to remember those holidays in detail, even if he can't remember them later on. Loved your food story!

A real slide show? Or did you have the slides scanned as I did Som ten years ago. I like looking at my old slides as well. Great stuff in them.

How very lovely for you all...well done you. As for the piggies......my son left a pizza in the oven once, he put it in at 9pm....then went to bed .....his dad found it crackling away at 8 am the next day.....he was not pleased !!!

What a great idea with your dad - Know he enjoyed it while he was telling you about it. Love the picture

That is such a fun shot. If you can do it, you should record your father narrating as he sees the slides. That way you have both a record of his voice and his memories. I have one phone call saved from my dad- and every now and then I just play it because I love hearing his voice.

Your day sounds happy, sad and stressful at the same time. But I'm sure at the end of the day, joy outweights everything.
And the "crisp" pigs in blankets (whatever those are, I have to google it 😉--> just did, we call them Spring-ins-Maul "jump in your mouth's"), make me smile, as long as you don't burn down the house. Such things happen, and I bet everyone has such a story to tell.

I can participate in the competition for a spoiled Christmas dish. Very good that you show your dad old slides and that he talks. When my grandmothers told me, I didn't listen. And nowI have an old pictures but I don't know who is in them.

Have you thought about recording his stories?

Getting to share the stories of the photos must have been a great gift for your father. Glad you had a happy time.

A wonderful and poignant narrative

How strange it is when animated stories flow from the brain with no hesitation... and then seem lost so soon after. But lovely to create treasure opportunities for your Dad, and all of you able to enjoy. 💛💛
And😂pigs in blankets.

What a funny photo. It's like the bear sat down on the job of welcoming the tourists. I'm glad that your father can still spend time with his family. As I spent time with my mother the last two years of her life, I always hoped that somehow she could remember me and how much I loved her even though she couldn't express it.
