The only bear as an Alaskan I was actually afraid of. Grizzly. Much more unpredictable than others. Of course, any time there's cubs around...variety didn't matter much. Unfortunately, grizzly was not very good eating. They primarily eat spawning salmon who are, not to be gross but, literally rotting to death; and you've probably heard the saying "you are what you eat"? On the other hand, black bear, very vegetarian. Fantastic stewed.
Wow .... you are in Alaska .... haven't been on much lately .... Is your son stationed in Alaska now? We are taking an Alaskan cruise next month . Fantastic capture and a little scary .
@lesip Thanks, Leslie! We returned home a week ago. Our ship is called a small boat and had just 28 passengers and 9 crew. It was able to go much further inland than bigger ships could, and the food was fantastic. We took a week to go from Juneau to Sitka, just 100 miles. I know you will have so much fun and your photos will be marvelous!

Thanks so much for your comments about my photo of the grizzly bear with her cubs. Pavlov Bay is a protected nature area where no hunting is allowed. Our guide told us that the bears like to eat grass in the days after they awake from hibernation because it balances the acid in their stomachs.
