Homelessness in Los Angeles is everywhere -- it is difficult to turn a corner or drive through an underpass without seeing an encampment, single tent, or sadly of all, just accumulated possessions on the sidewalk. And yet this is their world, people in the shadows as others simply drive by. So much political talk, so much money wasted, and the problem only gets worse.
I have avoided photographing the homeless in my project up to now but there was something about this woman's posture frozen in time, turned to me with outstretched arms in the midst of chaos, and the shadow that makes her -- unfortunately -- faceless that reached me and seemed to capture the hopelessness of the situation.
