Happy 75th Birthday to Grandma! by jbritt

Happy 75th Birthday to Grandma!

When I left my mother's 75th birthday party, I was planning to use a photo of the birthday girl with her youngest grandchild. But as soon as I saw this shot of Abigail, I knew it was the one. My brother's youngest daughter is adorable and very photogenic. It's hard to catch her, though, because she often hides from my camera. I was glad to have a long lens and patience tonight.
I understand the difficulties with getting either shy kids or the bold ones who won't stop posing to relax and ignore the camera for the candid shots that I love so well. So a still moment gave you the opportunity for a longer aperture, and your lens at 80 mm enabled you to shoot from a distance and yet still fill the frame with the child. (I'm not informed; I'm just talking aloud. I'm learning this stuff by deconstructing your photos.) Perfect composition between the two horizontal edges. You shot from her level, not a down shot that would diminish her; it's intimate. Nice catchlights in the eyes, clear irises (o what eyes!).
