Katie in Kenwood by jbritt

Katie in Kenwood

On this beautiful spring day, twelve of us biked to see cherry blossoms. Some left before others arrived and we occasionally rode at different paces so we were never all together. It was a more leisurely ride than usual but that suited the day perfectly. We biked around Haines Point, stopped for photos at the circle garden (where George Mason sits), and met Katie on the Capital Crescent Trail on our way to see the blossoms in Kenwood.

Katie is in the middle of her good period between chemo treatments for brain cancer. I was impressed with her energy and strength on the bike and especially with her spirit. I've been following her on Facebook and admiring her 365 Project, but it was so much nicer to see her in person. I believe this was the first time she uncovered her head in public. She was over-dressed for the warm weather so she had to take off her scarf to cool off. I took several photographs of her (with and without her head covered) and like this one the best. I think she is beautiful any way and hope she enjoys the cooling effects of a bare head as much as Nadine did.

Nadine was remembering how cool it felt without hair during her chemo summer. Her breast cancer diagnosis was exactly three years ago and we biked to Kenwood that day. It was so close to April 1st that she thought it was an April Fools joke when her doctor called with the pathology results. The two of us biked to Kenwood to see the cherry blossoms right after that call. This was an appropriate way to spend that anniversary even though we didn't plan it. That's the way Nadine and I often do things, unplanned.
I love this!
