When I went to enter the library photo contest earlier this week, I found out the deadline was extended so I took my entries home and decided to take more photos. The librarian remembered seeing me at the monthly garage sale, told me it was happening this Sat, and suggested I could take some photos there. This sale is on the first Saturday of the month between April and November, sponsored by the Civitans. It's in the three-level parking garage built on top of Rt 66, which is a few blocks away from the central library.
So, that was my plan for Sat morning. However, when the morning came I slept late and had a leisurely breakfast. By the time I arrived at the sale, there were less than 45 minutes left before closing time (1pm).
I had planned to photograph more than shop, but decided to browse a bit first. I bought a silk blouse and a pair of earrings for $6 from the first person I saw and then nothing else until the very end. I wanted a cat statue, but the $95 price was way too much and the seller wouldn't even counter my $30 offer.
These high-heeled boots caught my eye, not to buy but to photograph. After I got my photo, I noticed the rug. He was asking $150, but quickly lowered the price to $100. I offered $69, which was all the money I had. He countered with $90 and said I could take the rug home and mail him a check. He rolled up the rug and it fit in my bicycle pannier. I gave him $69, brought the rug home, and biked back with $20.
He said it was handmade with natural dyes and took a year to make in Afghanistan over 50 years ago. I'm not sure how much of that story to believe but it is beautiful and clearly hand-knotted. It's in my upstairs hall now but I might have to find a better spot for it. I think it is gorgeous and looks much nicer in my house than it did on the garage floor.
The colors of the rug and the pattern are both fabulous. I think you got a good deal and what a fabulous collector's item.
The SHOES!!!!!!!!! Not for me but I think they are fantastic! Did they sell?
