Drilling out Broken Bolt on Suzalaa's Engine

My son Michael changed the timing belt and did some other major work on his fiance's car this weekend. He got stuck on Sat because he had to buy a special purpose tool, but he picked that up Sun morning. I think it was called an engine core pulley tool, 50 mm. Pep boys actually "rented" it to him. Since he bought several other parts, they will refund his whole deposit when he returns the $40 tool.

Everything seemed to go smoothly on Sunday until he broke off the head of a bolt while putting things back together. This photo shows him drilling into the center of the bolt by hand. It was a little like digging a tunnel to get out of jail using a spoon. It took a long time and was harder than it looks. The space was too small to fit an electric drill. They finally got the hole big enough to fit the bolt extractor, but the extractor broke off inside the bolt.

So Suzalaa is still in our driveway, waiting for another tool to extract this bolt. And meanwhile, Michael leaves for Alaska tomorrow morning. He was supposed to leave on Saturday, but was too busy with a different project at work so he had to postpone. Fortunately, his fiance can drive his car while he's gone and Suzalaa will get fixed eventually.

This isn't the best photo. Just as it was hard to fit a drill in the space, it was also hard to fit a camera. And my husband was not patient enough to stop drilling or move aside while I took the picture.
Is that you doing that? Great detail!

@marytj That's my husband's thumb. Michael and Leslie took turns. I tried it a little, but my fingers weren't strong enough to help for long.

Love this story and the angle of the shot. I love the close up of the hand and the work.

Great job capturing the story in the picture. Tough spot to get a picture. Love the focus and dof. Draws your eye to the subject but still tells the story in context. Makes me glad it was not me drilling it out. (N)
