"Everybody knows"

that moths are grey or brown drab little creatures that eat your sweater. Neither premise is correct, very few like knitted food and certainly not all are drab.
This is my first ever sighting of a Wood Tiger Moth which I found at Wharram Quarry, a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve. It's heaven in a few acres full of butterflies, moths other insects and in their season (soon!) orchids.

@koalagardens It would be easy to mistake this gorgeous insect for a butterfly wouldn't it? LOL @annepann @susie1205 I am always excited to get a new "first" and this beauty was very cooperative, happy to pose for several minutes until I left it to rest.

Great looking moth, I should take the time to see them in the future. I usually only see them fluttering around the light.

@joev Moths are greatly under rated. Some are stunningly beautiful, some plain, some large, some minute, some fly by day, most at night.
Thanks, Joe

That's beautiful! We get a lot of tigers round here but I've never seen one of these.

@julienne1 It was a first for my friend as well as for me. I'm not sure if it's a rare moth - but next month I hope to find England's rarest which lives about 6 miles from my house.
