Heslington Hall and Derwent College

Hes Hall, administration centre of the Unversity of York (England) and Derwent College. Both Grade II listed.
Hes Hall built 1568, 10 years after the first Elizabeth took the throne, Derwent 400 years later of an innovative design and building technique, one of the first of its kind, hence the listing.

@fbailey Which one??? Hes Hall is stunning inside, the "old" colleges are utilitarian. Some of the concrete slab ones, like Derwent, have been taken down & replaced. I'll put up a picture of Wentworth reflected in the lake soon(ish) to show improvements. All the new buildings on the campuses are highly individual. In the city there are some ancient buildings, also part of the Uni. Hes East & West both have lakes, not necessarily where they were planned but where THEY decided to be.

Hess Hall is to the right? If so, beautiful building - it looks like a castle.

@365karly1 Indeed Heslington Hall is the big beautiful building on the right. I suppose it's obvious to we English that red brick buildings of this style are Elizabethan and about 400 years old. It's had a chequered history but is now basically an office block, but a very photogenic one.
Thanks, Karly.

The stonework and architecture provide an excellent foil against that clear Autumn sky. Big fav!

@s4sayer Thank you, Margo. York is full of old buildings but I suppose you don't expect to have an Elizabethan mansion as an office block!

@kwind Thank you. It's had bits added over the centuries and the Victorians were unable to leave anything alone. They even wanted to knock down our city walls to build houses!
