High Rise

Our houses are almost always built up off the ground. If we didn't, the heat from the home would melt the permafrost which is just below the tundra's surface, and the foundations would buckle and heave. It's VERY hard to keep anything level up here!
gorgeous lighting on this one ~ wow! like how the grasses are lit in the foreground, too! a fav for me! And interesting ~~ I was thinking it was going to be because of all the snow you get there ;)

Problems those of us in warmer climes would never think of. Frozen solid doesn't mean frozen stable, I guess. The sun is always at a good angle in winter there, it seems.

There were cities built in the Soviet Union with real high risers that also were constructed like this. Now there are people who live there and call it home, but the structures all need renovations and also the permafrost is melting due to the environmental changes - a big problem, as people really don't want to move out even if the government provides financial assistance (which is still cheaper than maintaining cities built on ice just for the purposes of running mines). You picture reminded me of this story!
