Another adaptation we've had to make. Our little village store rarely has "stuff" you can count on - like eggs, butter, any fresh produce. And when something fresh does come in - the word spreads like lightening and it's gone in a flash. So we stock up on freeze dried. These are LARGE cans of just about anything you can think of!
oh my yes, that would take some adjusting! I am getting spoiled by the abundant fresh produce here in California ~ I know I'm going to miss it when we leave. I can't imagine what that must be like in Alaska!
It's hard to imagine not having major supermarkets that have so much fresh produce and fresh meats and any and all canned goods needed.... But I'm a native southern Californian who still lives here...... We even have several Mexican supermarkets in our community.
@sitiodown LOL Tari! When I visit CA I feel like a sightseer in the produce department! I actually take photos to show my students that there is more than just iceberg lettuce in the world! @mbemis Mannie - it's actually not too bad when you combine it all in a crock pot. And it's just back-up when we don't have the real thing.
@aglennc Anita, I've been up here 8 years now. I met my husband, who is originally from the Fresno area. He'd been up here teaching since 2000 and invited me to join him. So I retired from CA teaching and relocated for a new phase in my life. A whole new adventure! We'll retire to Montana in about 3 more years.
I liked your comment @mbemis! Made me laugh. @sitiodown - When I was in CA to visit, I realised that the "fresh" that I've known before is not actually "fresh" at all, so I had to readjust my vocabulary. The stuff you get in Michigan is mostly "kind of fresh" as I know now after walking into a supermarket in CA. :)
Great story and yet another new insight for us, Joan!
OH you have given me a reality check...I sometimes imagine living in Alaska..the beauty if just amazing...but the cold...and lack of fresh produce...oh and did I mention the cold?? But so beautiful!
