Just go out through the Sydney Harbour exit and turn right and head to Hobart 631 nautical miles away.
This is the 77th running of the Sydney to Hobart ocean yacht race. It always starts on Boxing Day and finishes a few days later for the big yachts. The race record is about 1day and 9 hours.
The smaller boats depending on the winds can take up to a week.
These leading boats are classified as “Maxi” yachts. And are just short of 30m (or 100ft) long at the waterline.
They cost many millions to buy and more millions to race.
I learned to sail in this harbour......never forgot the first day of Spring when I had a lesson and EVERYONE was out in the harbour! I had a stressful 3 hours dodging skiffs, ferries, cruise ships, yachts, little dinghies......aye me, I remember it well! But I do love watching sailing racing. This is a lovely shot of the action on the Sydney-Hobart.
It was a beautiful day with a nice strong nor’easter. Great day.
I have other shots showing how h cric and scary the spectator fleet is!! I was on dry land but my family were down amongst it. Very scary.
