Proselytising outside St Andrew’s Cathedral (Anglican) in the middle of Sydney.
If I had the time I would not have got on the tram, gone back, moved in closer, cut out the plants in the foreground and used the camera in my camera bag rather than my iPhone!!!
This stylised “Eternity” used to be chalked on Sydney footpaths and steps in yellow chalk. It was written just like the posters in my photo. Arthur Stace, a recovering alcoholic, converted to Christianity in 1930 and for the first 27 years no one knew who was this “Mr Eternity”! He used to start at 4am. Then one of his church group saw him one day and “outed” him. All in all he kept it up for 37 years. I remember seeing Eternity on the footpaths when I started work in Sydney in 1966.
It takes a special kind of call to preach this way- it's not easy and not usually accepted. But the folks who "street preach" don't do it for fame- all it takes is one person who will listen. I like the candidness of this- even with the compositional distractions, it captures the spirit of the moment. Good shot.
I know the story of this remarkable man...
