A veteran explains the workings of the library in the basement of the ANZAC War Memorial, Sydney.
The books on the top shelf are the 128 volumes of “The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies” (USA Civil War). They were published around 1895 and used as an Australian Army teaching resource up until World War I.
How fascinating! My grandfather joined the Anzacs and fought in Gallipoli. He was a French Mauritian. He met my granny in the UK and married her. Sadly he took the family to Soviet Russia under Stalin's rule and died in 1941 in the Gulags during the purges, well before I was born, but that is a completely different story! When I visited Oz in 2009, including Sydney I never thought of finding a museum. Maybe next time! Thank you for this photograph! it might send me on a different investigation!
Thanks Diana. What was interesting was the sheer number of books, maps and other documents they have archived away!
Thanks for the much appreciated comments. Again!
Thanks for the much appreciated comments. I was at the memorial two months ago with another group. But we didn’t see the library!
The war memorial and museum is in the park right in the middle of the city. Easy to get to. Best to book a free 1.5 hour tour.
