The life cycle of the gardenia flower:
it starts in early spring as a flower bud, prior to opening. Then the flower fully opens with expanded petals. It then changes to become a senescent flower that is discoloured to pale yellow and then the first necrotic spots in the petals are visible.

Thanks for the much appreciated comments. Thanks again. The perfect white bloom was taken a few weeks ago. The older flowers were taken on the same day last week. I tried to get the same sized flower!
