Well, what can I say except that I'm not at my best at 3.30am. I should have used a wide-aperture but I still have no idea why I couldn't get the moon in focus!
I think there was not enough light once the earth's shadow started hitting the moon for the camera to figure out it was supposed to focus on it. My photos looked exactly like this.
I used manual focus set to infinity, but had to angle the camera so much that I think the zoom may have been slowly sliding back.
