1) Seal camera in Ziplock baggie
2) Test for airtight seal
3) Decide you are 95% reasonably sure it is airtight
4) Rationalize to self that if you are about to ruin the camera it is okay because your new camera is in shipment to you
5) Submerge ziplock baggie-covered camera into dishwashing sink, filled with hot water & Dawn dishwashing soap
6) Take half a dozen photos with camera aimed in various directions
7) Pull camera out of dishwater
8) Remove camera from baggie
9) Check for water damage
No Water Damage
I am about to walk down to the UPS Store to retrieve my new DSLR camera: I bought a factory-refurbished (same warranty as new!) Canon EOS Rebel T3i, from Amazon, for $435!

PS Your reasoning reminds me of a story. The Albuquerque Little Theater was built 80 years ago, and a bond issue passed providing it with a new stage floor. The last production on the old floor was "Singin' in the Rain, " where the stage was purposefully drenched.
I will NOT be doing the same with my new Canon T3i!
