I have written a lot about Carmen’s love for Diego, but the words spent are only a thimbleful when measured against the ocean of adoration this mother feels for her son. It’s been a long trip for Diego’s mom to this joyous point in her life, all the way from rural Spain to urban England to chilly Michigan and humid Louisiana. She landed in New England after stints in Mexico and Honduras and has traveled the world, from the Galapagos to Taiwan. A truly global citizen, she found me and we created him, our miracle and gift, our sweet, biological duet. We are all so lucky for this woman’s bold sense of adventure, but it is I who often feels luckiest as I get to watch (and capture) her greatest journey of all: motherhood.
