This photo isn’t about composition or even how cute Diego looks. It’s about awareness and how impressed I am that this child, who has only been on this planet for not-quite-22-months, and how he manages to hold a light sword that’s taller than he is with enough awareness that it doesn’t hit the ground. This is a Live Photo from an iPhone, so it’s actually a string of frames that can be looped, bounced or blurred into a quasi-prolonged exposure. And what I notice by watching the shot move through this single second of time over and over again is that Diego somehow intuitively knows how to turn and walk toward me without that sword whacking the ground. It sweeps gracefully at the same height over the stone patio and I watch, amazed.
