We visited Te Puia in the Whakarewarewa geothermal Valley. I have never been in an area where the entire town -- no, the entire region ! -- smelled of sulfur. In fact, the smell kept me awake at night. But where there is such water, there are interesting sites of geyesers, bubbling mud, and healing hot baths.
We had been there for a few hours, seeing the sites, the Maori cultural show, admiring the geysers, etc. Just as we were about to leave, we turned and saw this magnificent 100 ft/ / 30 meter geyser shooting up in the air! Apparently, Pohutu erupts about 20 times a day. I ran back to take photos from close up because I thought I could capture the power of the force better. But in the end, this one shows the scale of the geyser's height better because you can see the tiny people in the foreground on the bridge. Closeup, you get a lot of steam and no people in your photos.
