Montage? Collage? by jyokota

Montage? Collage?

My Get-Pushed Partner, Laura, challenged me to do a montage. It took me all week to try to figure out what the difference was between a montage and a collage. It seems that on 365, we tend to use the two terms interchangeably. But I wanted to use this challenge to try to sort out the nuances for myself. Daryl, Laura, Taffy and I engaged in various discussions, some on @Darylo 's site . . . http://365project.org/darylo/album3/2013-10-04#post-comment

I have to admit that my final effort isn't artistically at all what I would have liked to have uploaded. However, I hope it fulfills the montage challenge. The story is subtle to the viewer, perhaps not even clear. What I am trying to show here is that I was flying to Fargo, renting a car, and picking up my bag. But I had back problems and traveled with a cane, and the very compassionate man at Hertz offered to help me because there were no wheelchairs, porters, or even baggage carts around by the late hour we arrived. The irony of the wording on the baggage belt contrasts with my cane and back cushion in the middle photo, and only knowable to me, is that the top view is what I stared at for four hours of delay when the wheelchair I was sitting in was parked in front of the sign.

But what do YOU think -- montage? collage?
@la_photographic -- I'm sorry it took me so long! First, I had to figure out WHat a montage was, then I had to figure out the software to put it together. Not great photographically, so I will try again at some point. Thanks for the challenge . . . it sure kept me thinking all week!

Good narrative to go with the montage. It helped me appreciate both the effort that went into it, and see the narrative and the irony quite clearly. It was fun sorting out the definition with you!

Great montage.

For me this is a montage, but then if you asked me to tell you the difference I would probably show myself up. Sorry to hear about your back, I am in a similar spot with mine!

@taffy @la_photographic -- I have to work on montages again because while this was ok as a first effort and fulfilled the idea of a montage, I'd like to make one that is more visually pleasing, and with the narrative more clear through the visuals. Goals -- keeps us learning.
@seanoneill -- this definition sorting was quite a challenge! I realized I had made collages in the past. As for YOUR back, take care! Many of us suffer from chronic back problems, and then we have to consider: how many lenses and tripod and all can I carry around?

@jyokota Thanks. Hopefully my chiro at lunchtime has worked after suffering for nealry 10 days. It feels a lot better certainly!!

Excellent montage. I'm still mulling over a few ideas for mine.

Just so you know, I scrolled back up to the photo before your explanation and the things I saw connecting had to be about comfort/not comfort, so success! I was taking note of the weather, the references to joint pain, the cushion and the cane...and that note to hurry it all along with the luggage not retrieved as of yet (well, I saw that implied message juxtaposed with the ad for the joint clinic). Picasa has some nice collage framing ideas too in case you do another montage. Great job. You nailed it conceptually in my mind.

How is your back?

@jyokota Oh, and the photo of sunflowers all along the wall--what a good trick of the eye! :)

I will have to look up the definition but from what I see and think I understand...a montage is often a collage, but a collage is not necessarily a montage?
Oh dear...hope your back improves soon. Back problems are nasty.
