Nanjing Confucius Temple by jyokota

Nanjing Confucius Temple

Fuzi Miao was first constructed in 1034 and honors Confucius, the Buddhist scholar who preached "respect, restraint and order." Yet surrounding this old temple is a very popular, glitzy and blinking light-filled shopping and dining district, completely counter to the beliefs of Confucius.

I found this candle floating in a big pot with small bowls at the bottom, and temple goers were gently placing coins strategically onto the water, attempting to get it to gently sink down into one of the bowls, each symbolizing such things as good luck, prosperity, etc.

SOOC -- I had to squeeze in between many people tossing coins in order to get this image tall, to give a sense of serenity amidst chaos.

Brilliant!
