Gdańsk Solidność Museum

Located in the historic shipyard where the Polish Solidarity Movement had its beginnings, this museum has interactive features that tell the history of how workers went on strike to protest diminishing working and living conditions. Ultimately, over time, it led to the beginning of a rebirth of a democratic country. I wanted to post some of the more photographically interesting images, but it took many to tell the story, so I focused on the sign outside and the rusty building structure. Without doubt, the most interesting part of the story for me was listening to a friend whose parents grew up during Communism as she explained how they had come from such poverty in a country where rising above it was impossible so Communism, had allowed them more equality than before, and therefore gave their family more opportunities today. Realizing that our pasts, no matter what, are part of our present and future, means recognizing the whole picture. It's easy to rail against a political ideology we don't believe in, but it's an incomplete assessment of history.
Interesting narrative that makes the image more alive for me.

Okay when things that happened in my lifetime are called historic it makes me feel really old. I mean this feels like it just happened. And it was so big. Don't want to think about how long ago it really was.
