Formerly the Chicago Public LIbrary, this stunning Tiffany dome is definitely worth a visit on a photowalk in Chicago. Here, you see Taffy and Meg, a fellow 365-er who was visiting from Cincinnati. I'm still trying to figure out my new ultra-wide lens. Lots of strange lines here!
@brigette@mingr -- thank you for your comments! @taffy -- you are ever supportive, finding what works in a photo that clearly needs work! But you can't get better without practice, right? What was interesting about this exercise is that so many angles "flattened" the dome in the final image! Even when I did HDR! It's such a beautifully half-circle dome that I was surprised. This one isn't as bad as the others in terms of flattening the dome. Must get more practice.
Today I went out with Meg and heard all about her wonderful time with you and Taffy. Who is coming in May? I'd really like to come. When is it exactly?
@amandal -- would be such fun if you could come, too! It's mostly a UK group ( @pamknowler , Sarah, Louise, Donna but also @weezilou from California and @rosiekerr from St Louis. April 30 - May 7, more or less.
What a stunning image! Is this the library downtown with the gargoyle-type owls atop? I'd not only love to go here, I'd really love some advice on taking such an amazing image! My HDR still doesn't even come close to this!
@Weezilou Not far from there...a 5-6 hour drive. I'm in Cincinnati. I just have 3 kids and work and money to figure out. I would LOVE it!!! So need to get to my birthplace again!
@Weezilou -- this was taken in what is now the Chicago Cultural Center, but built originally as the Chicago Public Library, The building with owls (that look like gargoyles) is the current library. We should go to both! I took this image with my new ultra-wide 11mm and I was squatting down in a corner with my camera pointing up, diagonally across the room.
@taffy It's a mighty big hat she wears, but she does wear it well! And Junko, thanks for the clarification about the library! (Another place I loved when there once was the Palmer House interior. Heather had just taken me to Show Boat as a birthday present, so the stop there was a natural, but I recall it was lovely... Of couse there's no shortage of choices...)
@Weezilou Must definitely put a Palmer House stop on the Chicago route! It's so awe inspiring to go up the escalator and have that ceiling slowly come into view.
@amandal@jyokota@Weezilou@taffy how wonderful if you will be able to make it too Amanda! I am getting so excited at the thought of meeting all you wonderful 365ers! I love seeing and hearing about the places we are going to visit! If you are interested Amanda make sure Taffy has your email so that we can include you in the round Robbins going back and forth. 4 of us coming from the UK - we are having our first get together on 21st November - lots to talk about! We are coming over on 30th April to 7th May - see you all then!
@amandal It would be great if you could come Amanda! Tag me with your email and I can add you to the group email list. That way, even if last minute, you'd be up to speed on the planning. April 30 - May 7th, so time to come in for all or part of it, depending on family and work. They were able to get a good deal at a nice hotel near Millennium Park and Junko and I are going to set up various photo walk recommendations. I suspect some will involve everyone, and some will involve various subsets. It will be fun -- and a big variety, we hope, of opportunities for shooting in a range of settings. We've recommended that folks get a CTA pass and if they want to do more than 2 walking tours with the architectural foundation, and a boat trip, it might be worth joining CAF (each membership gets a buy one - get one free river cruise/tour). Anyway, easy to do this last minute as well as get involved in the planning!
