We were "stuck" in Berlin an extra day due to an airport strike so we decided to go to a bookstore (of course). Wandering along the street afterward, we passed a window that had an eye-catching postcard of a woman that had been punched and had beautifully crafted silver earrings inserted. And on the wall inside, was this set of tools. What could we do? We were drawn inside. The silversmith had not intended to have her "shop" open that day so all her wares were put away, but her tools were out. She made each of these tools, and I liked how the color version shows the warmth of the wooden handles, the shiny coldness of the heads of varying shapes. The emphasis seems to be on the handles and the person holding the tools, and her logo is her hand.
(She has a daughter and I wonder if that's who contributed that image drawn there -- you know, like "refrigerator art" that parents post of their children's work.)
Here's a link to her website that has a more artistically photographed version of these tools, and shows her inside her shop -- and when you see how understated that store window is WITH all the jewelry out, you will understand how powerful the draw of these tools along the back wall here when I was compelled to go in. Stay tuned, more photos of her work to follow!) http://morkel.de
I like the color. They look odd in such a clean and empty space - the color adds to this oddness a bit. Plus all the colors in the picture are somewhat muted and go together - I definitely prefer the color.
I prefer the colour version. The warm shades of the wood make it more personal somehow. Not surprised you were drawn inside - fabulous find. I love Berlin!
Beautiful shot and interesting narrative. My father-in-law was a silversmith, a trade he inherited from his father. And he was a really good craftsman with his silver, too.
