A Very Monochromatic Lunch by jyokota

A Very Monochromatic Lunch

I've been thinking that I'd like to study and practice food photography -- but I think the first step is making something that actually looks appetizing. Alas, my lunch is delicious and healthy but not photogenic. Olive oil in top corner a gift from Mrs. @domenicododaro and the Saba next to it something I learned about from Domenico in one of my cooking lessons in their home, and then mysterious powdery stuff at the top is nutritional yeast, as recommended by @ukandie! over lunch in Oak Park. Of course I should just ask Domenico for lessons since he's the food photographer of three cookbooks!
That looks an incredibly healthy lunch....you captured it well & it looks lovely!

The plates too add to food photography. I would have put something green in here - celery? lettuce leaves?

The plates add a touch of color.

Ooh, what kind of cheese?
December 19th, 2020
@stephomy nothing particularly interesting but it was sharp cheddar.

@jyokota Yum. Works for me.

@stephomy I have a true confession story to tell you. I loved the Beecher's Cheese in Seattle where we had dinner probably just after I saw you. And then -- there's a Beecher's at the airport! What could I do? I bought lots of cheese and rearranged my entire suitcase to hold it all. I took out my suitcase contents in order to make the maximum space for cheese, and I left out the external drive that held all my photos !!!!! Years and years worth, about 2T of photos! And my entire computer backed up to it, too. At first I was so worried because it feels like an invasion of privacy that someone could have simply opened it up and seen my entire computer backup. And photos. But after several months of nothing weird happening I figured whoever got it just cleared the memory and used it for a new hard drive for themselves. I hope. But there's my story of Beechers Cheese and Seattle airport.

Great story re the cheese. Suggestion re the photo...plates and setting are great but I think there is too much around it...takes the eye to reading

@jgpittenger I see what you mean. Thanks for tip. I am really beginning to think about food photography as more than simply "look at what I am eating" or in my case "look, my food turned out edible" because I see amazing photos that even have credited "food stylists" who arrange all kinds of props.

A lovely looking lunch. A few years ago I dabbled in food photography for a while. I decided to go to second hand shops / op shops and look for odd, one off plates, bowls, cups, interesting cutlery and cooking utensils. I found some really cheap and interesting pieces that I bought to use as props in my photos. I personally found they added interest to what was otherwise just a simple food photo. ... Just an idea.

You are giving me ideas.

@jyokota Now THAT is a confession! At least now they have an online store: https://www.beechershandmadecheese.com/cheese-gift-baskets-and-collections

I remember when they first showed up at Pike Place Market. I was working at a bakery near there and hanging out with some anarchists punks who were all vegan. They weren't thrilled with this big fancy new cheese place that came in with their slick clean kitchen and giant vats of cheese curd. Oh well, all the anarchists moved to Tacoma, and the cheese is still there. The cheese won.

@cwbill -- ideas about fixing monochromatic meals, or about photographing them, or ??? making sure you add color to food you plan to photograph!

@stephomy YIKES! It's too accessible. I could pay the $$$ when I thought it was a once in a rare while trip to Seattle but now it's too readily available so I will have to wait til I can go to Costco again where they have it at a more affordable price point. @taffy 's husband found the Beecher cheese there! But oh, such temptation. And the story of the cheese winning and the departure of the anarchists is so funny!

Looks delicious!

Maybe if they were more spread out?

Love the plates!

The image is intriguing, “nutritional yeast”! but the comment stream is the most intriguing of all!

@kgolab That's totally brilliant! @taffy and I had another online PS lesson together and I was telling her about your ideas for getting props. And we sighed and said, some day . . . when we can go out again. But truly, what a brilliant thing to do. Stay tuned -- maybe in another. year I can go out and do that. Thanks for sharing the idea! BTW, do you have your food photos tagged in a way that I can look them up?
December 19th, 2020
@jyokota I think that they were from before I did 365. I will have a look and see. but I am pretty sure they are not on here. Another thing I recalled I did, was buy large scrapbooking pages, with different designs on them to look like marble, wood, etc to place the food on top of, as well as some cheap linen from the second hand store / op shop) so that I had different backgrounds, instead of them all looking like my kitchen counter or table at home.
December 19th, 2020
@kgolab hmm -- might be time for you to dust all that off and use them again. Sounds like you have quite the stash! I also used to be a scrapbooker so I might have some papers stored somewhere. I'm going to start thinking and gathering.

@jyokota Awesome. I look forward to seeing your creations :)
