Russia's Red Square is called "Krasnaya Ploschad" and is named such because in old Russian, "Krasnaya" meant beautiful, and eventually came to also mean "red." But the history of this square ranges from political gatherings to horrific executions as well as to festivities.
Although the name of the square does not refer to the beautiful red brick buildings and Kremlin wall adjacent to it, this building represents the solid, stately buildings you see all over Moscow.
