whitebaiter

A seasonal pastime here on the coasts of New Zealand, catching the whitebait (juvenile native fish ) that run up the creeks and rivers at this time of year. Each of the five species is endangered and will most probably go extinct before too long, no matter what people try to do, the spawning habitat has been reduced and so on. I suppose someone could figure out how to farm them, they are a popular delicacy. I dont fish for them, the tiny eyes in the patties creep me out.
Its good to see this sort of patient occupation. I think they must have plenty of time to spare and the thought of whitebait for maybe two meals, carries them on! Kali - you can dead head the whitebait if the eyes freak you out!

Great shot, he looks like he's settled in for a while.

They were very popular a few years ago, but not much these days.

I'm with you Kali, don;t like the eyes. My sister used to try and pick them out.

Lovely scene. I don't think I've ever eaten them although my neighbours were big whitebait fishers and used to go every year when I was a kid.
