Why did the chicken cross the road?

Today my young chickens were hanging out in the road. This is a dangerous place for them due to predators and cars. This student driver came upon them and they ran in front of the car for quite a while. Finally the chickens made a turn. Surely it made the student driver nervous with his teacher, friends, and me watching.
