This is the ceiling of a restaurant we were in tonight. Illinois joined the union December 3rd, 1818. It has been known as the Prairie State since 1842. Most of the state was once covered in prairie grasses. Illinois sets aside the third full week in September each year as Illinois Prairie week to demonstrate the value of preserving and reestablishing native Illinois prairies.
