I can not believe not one has given any advice Kerri.
First your hand should not be closed, maybe no hand.
Soft filter or a small amount of blur.
A black top to the neck line.

Your camera can be set up on the tv, so you can see how the portrait looks.
Your camera, Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi is the same as mine, Canon EOS 500D. Lens might be different.
