Rare Books

I visited the rare book section of the library at the U.S Department of the Interior today. The red bound book in this photo is a history of the American Civil War, which, as you know, started in 1861 and ended in 1865. However, this history was published in 1863--in the middle of the war. The author must have been very optimistic.
What a treasure. The binding is still in such good condition. Nice pic.

@deborahortiz Thanks, Debbie. I need to return to take a closer look at the contents. I wonder if it even includes the Gettysburg battle.

Nice capture but those spines need a bit of restoration, perhaps they can turn over a new leaf.

I love old books, so this photo is pleasing to me. It would be interesting to read the Civil War one to see if history matched the author's optimism.

@rytoonz Thanks, Bob. Yes, they do need some help. They're barely holding together.

@ladymagpie Thanks, Heather. They definitely need some attention.

@lauriehiggins Thanks, Laurie. I love photographing old books. They have such character. I plan to return to have a closer look at the contents of that red book. The three books to its right are a three-volume history of the Civil War also.

@otter Thanks, Otter. Kindles are not as picturesque, you must admit. I own two, but I never photograph them. :)

I love to study Civil War history. Maybe because my ancestors were a part of that time period and it makes me feel closer to them. This is a great photo.

@pauliek Thanks, Paulette. And so true about feeling closer to your ancestors. I absolutely love studying the Civil War also. I have some ancestors who fought for a Minnesota regiment.
