Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial by khawbecker

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial

This log cabin is a replica of the one that Thomas Lincoln built, with the help of his son, Abraham Lincoln, on a 160-acre farm here in southern Indiana. The foundation for the original log cabin is only yards away from this replica. It is part of a National Park and living history memorial to Abraham Lincoln's youth spent here from ages 7 to 21. It is near a little town called Lincoln City. The grave site for Lincoln's birth mother, Nancy Hanks, is found on a knoll above this cabin. She died at age 35 of "milk sickness" caused by drinking milk from a cow that had eaten a poisonous plant. She had lived here in Indiana less than two years. Thomas later remarried Sarah "Sally" Bush Johnston, who helped to cultivate Abraham Lincoln's rare intellect.

For a close up of a front corner of the cabin, see http://365project.org/khawbecker/past-and-presen/2014-05-15

@eyesmile Thanks, Gena. Yes, there was a fire going in the fireplace. It was a bit chilly in the morning there yesterday. They had a frost warning the previous night.

A different life in a different time.I love the craftsmanship you captured here. The idyllic country setting is great. The buildings and the green of the surroundings also provide a lovely contrast of earthy colors. Super Karen!
