Hopewell Indian Mounds by khawbecker

Hopewell Indian Mounds

High on the bluff above the Mississippi River at the little noticed Gramercy Park in East Dubuque, Illinois, there are twenty-six ancient Hopewell Indian burial mounds dating from between 200 and 400 A.D. This photo includes just two of the mounds, the size of which is evident from a comparison to the picnic pavilion behind the mounds.
So much green!! Wow that is so amazing.....so ancient. I wonder how they can come up with a date? Wonderful capture!

Green, green, green! Thanks for the historical info too. There are a number of western tribes that use burial mounds too. Had to be some communication between cultures across space and time, right? Nice shot Karen.

@eyesmile Thanks, Gena! I think they date it by carbon dating the strata above and below the location of the burial objects. I'm so fascinated by the burial mounds that still exist on many bluffs above the Mississippi River.

@radiogirl Thank you! It is crazy green here right now because of the heavy Spring rains they had. When I first arrived, they had more torrential rain.

@davydo Thanks, Dave! I agree. I've read that archaeological studies show there were great trade networks among tribes all over the continent.
