I passed through beautiful Cumberland, Maryland, on my way home on Saturday, May 31. I stopped briefly to see the terminus of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath. It begins in Georgetown in Washington, D.C., and ends here, 184.5 miles away. The monument in the lower left corner commemorates the Irish workers who helped build the canal. The canal runs parallel to the Potomac River. It operated commercially from 1831 to 1924. Today, it is a National Historic Park used for biking, hiking and camping.
