that's how you spell it wen you do your aerobic exercises in the tree tops :) I was thrilled to see Greta back again as she has been away from the property nearly all year!
thank you for the many comments on my project
@lovingandsharing@hermann@hjbenson thank you! I know what direction she came back from both one day last month and now, so I have a clue vaguely where she has been. It does put the mind at rest as she is very important to my colony as she is 11-12 years old so a matriarch and is now hanging around some young mothers.
It's like that every day for me Kay as I head out to check for koalas I have no idea what faces I will find! :)
@koalagardens am pleased she is safe as she is getting older, in her years...I would love what you do, every day is different, pleased you have such a lovely job, very rewarding, well done :)
@lovingandsharing thanks Kay! I don't get paid or anything to do this, I am just regenerating native habitat on my own property because I have a passion for it. It is a great contrast to working for a living to be out with nature! it is incredibly rewarding to see them thriving here for now, because the koalas are fast diminishing as their habitat is destroyed. I also do volunteer work with a local koala care centre :)
@beryl there are debates about this but I think it's safe to say average 10 - 14 years. saying this we lose a lot of koalas to cars at 1-3 years old!
just recently at the koala care centre we had a 18-19 year old koala come in and we were stunned. we knew he was that old (he had died however) because he had been in to us and tagged 14 years ago and I had just done all this work on a database for us, and within seconds I identified him. Seeing one that old is pretty rare! We do see a few that are around 13 and they are usually really looking old, so Greta is doing very well for her age I'm so happy to say!
@ubobohobo I'm in a natural koala corridor. OK getting that statement out of the way, the habitat around my property is terribly fragmented as mostly everything around here are small holdings so like 10 - 100 acre lots, mostly of them being well less than 100 and mostly being used for cattle.
some cattle farmers are really clued in and work to plant lots of habitat in strategic ways, but not all.
this means the koalas have to move across large open areas to get to clumps of habitat which is when they are at most risk of course.
Greta is a really good size. I believe she is really important to the colony.
@koalagardens Thanks. I ask because I had one arrive here but he moved on travelling along the road corridors because being a grazing area favourable habitat is very scattered. I always wonder where he ended up.
@ubobohobo when joey leaves mum they have to find their own home range, so you get travelling koalas for this reason. then any time habitat is removed koalas will be disturbed and may have to seek new home ranges. I have had so many, that like you, I wonder where they ended up as they just passed through here :)
@365karly1 thanks for asking Karly! I have 8 koalas that are part of the colony here. Greta is one of those 8 and the one I have the least often. Even though these 8 are part of the colony here, they are not all on the property every day. Each koala in the colony has it's own home range, and for all of them the Koala Gardens property is only part of that range. So they come and go on a daily basis. I never know what I will find!
In the 3 years I have been daily spotting and recording them there have been 43 different koalas sighted. (I use nose pattern recognition to identify them)
THANKS FOR ASKING :)
