dental health check passed

Finally a shot showing all the molars! You can just see her top 2 incisors, and the bottom 2 are prominent. They then have a gap, no second incisors or canines. The black covering her teeth is perfectly normal. We age koalas by feeling the ridges on the molars, and visually I can see they are still obvious and sharp (she is 4-5 years old)
Amazing capture

Wow! Love those lower front teeth!

Such a super capture - is the black covering of the molar teeth due to the constant grinding of the eucalyptus leaves or is it skin pigmentation! fav

@beryl yes it's a build up that they get, but it doesn't erode the teeth like tartar does for us

@ludwigsdiana I've been trying for this kind of shot for years!

Interesting - a ridged top palate!

Great mouth view. Was that a giant yawn?
November 3rd, 2022
@carole_sandford - yes, this is part of why all their communication is through smell, as the hard palate and tongue are big receptors and with the ridges on both palate and tongue, the surface area is greatly increased. their sinus structure is insane, nearly all above the eyes behind the forehead (they have quite small frontal lobes)

@gardencat yes, she is yawning, not singing haha

Those teeth seem very adapted to that high fiber leaf diet. The tongue is also interesting.

@onewing haha yeah cooperative - it has taken me 8 years of stalking koalas to finally get this shot

@shutterbug49 yes, if you look up higher at a reply I made to Carole I talk about the palate and tongue ridges and the extra surface area they create for enhancing their olfactory functions (the way they use smell for everything)
