I know this isn't the best photo but it shows my view from today. I heard a loud slapping sound from my patio and when I looked through our telescope, I saw a humpback whale amongst sports fishermen slapping his fin against the water. I used my 500m lens and then cropped this. I would guess I was at least 4 km away. It was amazing to see and hear. I can't even begin to imagine how exciting it must have been for the people in the nearby boats.
How fabulous to see AND hear this wonderful event! Great capture for the distance. Must have been really amazing for those folks in the boats, for sure.
I love this. It takes me back to my first holiday in America. I was in Falmouth on Cape Cod and we went out whale watching from Provincetown. We followed a humpback for some time. It seemed to play with us and when we got too close would dive and resurface a safe distance. It was wonderful.
Oh, so cool, to see humpback whale fins from your house. Given the distance that you describe, and the cropping, this is really pretty clear! Neat sighting... so glad we get to see it through your lens.
