Rotten Tree

We went for a walk on the island yesterday and came across a bunch of fallen trees and a wood pile of rounds for future fire wood. My husband said these rounds with holes in the middle are from a rotten tree. I had never seen anything like it before and thought they were worthy of a photo.

Whoa! I have seen rotten tree trunks before. But these logs are astonishing with those sticks in them, forming that star shape inside. I wonder why? how?
