The Festival of St.John (the Baptist) is the main event of the year for the French Catalans. In the evening the children of each Catalan village, town or city have a torchlight parade, the torches lit from an eternal flame rekindled each year at the summit of Canigou, the mountain which is visible from all parts of North Catalonia. At the end of the parade, the torches are thrown onto a bonfire, followed by dancing, singing, drinking and fireworks.
