Puits à glace

Snow holes, basically. This one is about 6 metres deep, and is located on a North facing slope. It would have been filled with snow in winter, which would then have been compressed by its own weight to form ice. There would have been a roof to conserve the cold. Essentially it was a primitive refrigerator serving a large farmhouse, the ruins of which are about 10 minutes walk away.
