My uncle was a pilot for the Port of Barrow, and lived in one of these terraced houses at Rampside. We used to spend our summer holidays there, and at night, from our bedroom, my brother and I would watch the beam from the lighthouse sweeping across the sands and the sea. The lighthouse was built by the Furness Railway Co., who developed Barrow as a port. I doubt if there are many uglier lighthouses in the world, but it is classed as a protected building by English Heritage.
