Stage set for 'Juno and the Paycock', a Sean O'Casey play I studied at school. Going to the theatre is, I think, the thing I miss most through living where we do. I had to take the opportunity to go tonight whilst briefly in Cork, though I have seen the play before, at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, O'Casey's spritual home. I wasn't allowed to take photos after the play started, but I think the building is nice enough to merit a photo by itself. It is a Victorian theatre, and Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy have graced those boards. The play brought back fond memories of my English Lit teacher, Mrs.Lodder, a raven-haired beauty who wore short skirts and fishnet stockings and smoked during the lessons. I got the top mark in English Lit, as did most of my all male class, attempting in vain to impress her.
Hope you enjoyed it . I saw an Abbey Theater production of it a few years ago , the Captain and Joxer are two of O'Caseys great characters. great shot for a dimly lit theater ...
I should have read your whole narrative, the production I saw had Sinead Cusack as Juno and Ciaran Hinds as Capt Jack. I think that teacher may have had a big influence on you she sounds like quite a character...
I would have remembered those names, Irish acting royalty. In fact, I am beginning to think it was 'Shadow of a Gunman' I saw at the Abbey, and it was the Gate where I saw 'Juno & the Paycock'. it was a good show tonight, they put the hope, comedy and joyful anarchy into a long first act, and then the tragedy and family disintegration into a shorter second act.
